4th & Barelas History

The Gutierrez family were the original owners of the collection of buildings located at the corner of 4th & Barelas and remained the owners until Homewise purchased the property in 2020. First American Camp & Service Station, a tourist cabin business and service station, were the original businesses located on this property in the 1920s through the 40s. The camp was located on the west side of the property (behind the 4th Street-facing buildings), and the service station was located at 1407 4th Street. Roadside cabins became popular in the 1920s as more people traveled by automobile.

In the early 1940s, the Gutierrez family constructed the building at 1407 4th Street, which would become the home to El Coronado Café, a popular Mexican restaurant run by members of the Gutierrez family. In addition of El Coronado Café; Coronado Chile Products and a meatpacking business also existed on the property.

Most of the buildings experienced vacancies throughout the years, and the property transitioned to more industrial uses. In the 80s and 90s, Nick’s Small Engine Repair was located at 1413, and Glass & Screens Unlimited was located at 1407; followed by Master Home Improvement in the late 90s.

The property experienced a renaissance in the early-2000s and became an art destination among young people in Albuquerque. The Petting Zoo was located in the former El Coronado Café building and was an art space that hosted monthly variety shows featuring local musicians, poets, and other performers. The other 4th Street facing units have also seen many different DIY spaces including the Small Engine Gallery, the Donkey Gallery, the Normal Gallery, Tan Gallery, the Tannex, Graft Gallery, La Chancla, and present-day FourteenFifteen Gallery & the Minnow.
